Legacy of Vader: Reign of Kylo Ren: Part 7
What is it ? : Kylo demands his lightsaber back, but the old woman tells him that would be stupid of her, and she is brilliant. The bar patrons ask her if she'll be all right, identifying her a Grandea, and she tells them this won't take long, telling Kylo they should speak outside where they won't bother or worry anyone. Kylo says they have nothing to talk about, so she tells him it won't take long.
As they head outside he asks how she knows his name, and she tells him that he's screaming it with his mind "I am Kylo Ren" again and again as if to drown out everything else. He tells her to keep out of his mind, but she says she isn't, he's broadcasting it.
She tells him about order 66, where she was with her master and the Clone Troopers turned on them, but instead of fighting them she used the Jedi Mind Trick to convince them that she was disguised as one of them, so they turned on each other. She went into hiding, abandoning her lightsaber and jedi robes and thinking she was safe as she practiced her use of the mind trick, convincing those she met that they didn't remember her, and even getting so skilled she could effect Toydarians and Hutts, and she began to think she was safe.
But eventually Vader and two inquisitors found her, the inquisitors chased her down, and cut off her leg, so she used the Mind Trick to convince them that they had killed her, and they returned to Vader to report that to him.
She tells him that she took the Mind Trick far beyond being a trick and uses it to survive, telling him that she has told him this story so he can see she is no Jedi any more. But he tells her that she is close enough and he will end this, so she uses the Force to dig deeply into his mind, to find his secrets, telling him he could have been so much more.
He grabs his lightsaber from her, slashing her, and as she collapses she tells him that Luke is dead, she sensed it, and if he didn't as Luke's student, then what is he really. And Kylo finds himself in the street alone, so he screams with anger. . . .
High Points : It's a fairly interesting tale of a Jedi taking the Mind Trick to extremes, using it everywhere for everything, to get transport across the galaxy, to make people forget they ever met her, and then in a moment of desperation to make Inquisitors think they've killed her. It makes you look at the moment in the cantina when she calms the other patrons and wonder how much she's influenced them over the years, they seem protective towards her, is that genuine, or forced by her.
And it makes you have to interpret the final pages of this issue differently, as I don't believe that Kylo actually slashes her with his lightsaber, it seems obvious that she's doing the same trick all over again, getting him to think that he is killing her, even if he realises the truth once she has escaped.
I think adding to this is the way she probes his mind for the information about Luke, but when he accuses her of doing this same thing to get his name, she tells him it isn't actually possible to go into someone's mind and take memories, so she's either lying, or the second time isn't actually reality just his perception from being mind tricked.
Low Points : So, I'm a little confused by the ending, where Grandea lets Kylo know that she influenced him and escaped, instead of making him think he killed her and she became one with the force. Which is the same question that must be asked when Vader asks about her body from the inquisitors, couldn't it just have become one with the force, or is Obi-Wan truly the first time he knows of this happening, which is why he probes Obi-Wan's cloak on the Death Star, in confusion.
And I'm also a little confused, Vanee told Kylo last issue that Vader only heard about Grandea when he was too busy dealing with Luke, but this issue has him encountering her along with some Inquisitors, although it's possible that he didn't know it was the same Jedi.
So what do you really think ? : I'm amused that even in fairly pointless moments the comic shows how bad at all of this Kylo is, that Grandea takes his lightsaber from him using the force, when she's not even that good at that type of thing. She claims to not be a Jedi, but still manages to disarm the Supreme Leader of the First Order, the mighty Kylo Ren disarmed by an old woman.
Final Words : So Kylo set out to prove himself worthy of inheriting Vader's legacy, and fails at it, Grandea escapes, so where does this leave Kylo and Vanee?
